Amy and I understood each other in a rare way, or at least she definitely knew me better than I knew myself. This book has taken on many forms since I started it in 2001. My young spirit desperately wanted it written down … for posterity? I can’t know. I was blind with affection, fear, and power. I started it when we were still full of hope. She was going to get better. I was going to Stanford and she was going to Berkeley—she had it all figured out.

When it became clear she wasn’t going to make it, I doubled down on the book. When she died, I became obsessed with publishing the book. It was my way of capturing her story and her life as well as my own.
